Science in Key Stage 1

Science is about being curious and investigating the natural and humanly constructed world around me. It is asking questions about what I notice in order to develop my understanding of scientific ideas.

To do this I use different types of scientific inquiry to answer my own questions. Scientific inquiry is using evidence from observing changes over a period of time, noticing patterns, grouping and classifying things and carrying out simple comparative tests. I will do this through first hand practical experiences and using secondary sources of information. 

I will use simple scientific language to talk about what I have found out and to communicate my ideas to a range of audiences in a variety of ways.

Science in Lower Key Stage 2

 Science in Lower Key Stage 2 is about broadening my scientific view about the natural and humanly constructed world around me.

To do this I will explore, discuss, test and develop ideas about every day phenomena and the relationships between living things and familiar environments by developing my ideas about functions, relationships and interactions.

I will ask my own questions about what I observe and make decisions about which types of scientific inquiry are likely to be the best way of answering them, including observing changes over a period of time, noticing patterns, grouping and classifying things and carrying out simple comparative and fair tests. I will do this through first hand practical experiences and using secondary sources of information. 

I will draw simple conclusions and use some scientific language first to talk about, and then later to write about, what I have found out.

Science in Upper Key Stage 2

Science in Upper Key Stage 2 is about deepening my understanding of a wide range of scientific ideas about the natural and humanly constructed world around me.

To do this I will explore and discuss my ideas, ask my own questions about scientific phenomena and analyse functions, relationships and interactions more systematically. I will encounter more abstract ideas and begin to recognise how these ideas help me to understand and predict how the world operates. I will learn about how scientific ideas change and develop over time. 

I will select the most appropriate ways to answer science questions using different types of scientific inquiry including observing changes over different periods of time, noticing patterns, grouping and classifying things and carrying out comparative and fair tests. I will do this through first hand practical experiences and using secondary sources of information. 

I will draw conclusions based on my data and observations, use evidence to justify my ideas and use my scientific knowledge, understanding and language to explain my findings.
