DT in Key Stage 1

Design Technology
Design Technology is a practical subject where I will be given the opportunity to be creative and imaginative. I will learn, and be given the opportunity, to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to design, make and evaluate products in a range of real-life contexts.

Cooking & Nutrition
Cooking and nutrition is an important life skill. I will be given the opportunity through cooking and nutrition lessons to learn about the importance of a healthy and varied diet and to understand where my food comes from. I will enjoy cooking a variety of basic foods to help me develop a love and passion of cooking and eating healthily.

DT in Key Stage 2

Design Technology
Design Technology is a practical subject where I will be given the opportunity to be creative and imaginative. I will learn, and be given the opportunity, to further develop my knowledge, understanding and skills to design, make and evaluate products in range of real-life contexts. Increasingly, my own creativity, research and knowledge of the needs of my target audience, will inform, direct and challenge my ideas. I will increasingly apply my skills and knowledge learned in Science, Computing and Maths to help with the design, make and evaluate process.

Cooking & Nutrition
Cooking and nutrition is a crucial life skill that will help me to feed myself and others healthily and affordably. I will be given the opportunity to understand the principles of a healthy and varied diet, prepare and cook a variety of predominately savoury dishes from a variety of cultures using a range of cooking techniques. I will understand seasonality, know where and how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed. I will be provided with opportunities to cook for myself and others to help me develop a love and lifelong passion for cooking and eating healthily. I will increasingly apply my skills and knowledge learned in Science and PSHE to help with my broader understanding of healthy lifestyle choices.

Intent, Implementation & Impact Statement

Below is a link to our Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement for Design Technology. This document outlines, for Design Technology at Great Finborough Church Primary School, our aims and vision (Intent), our approach to planning, delivery, assessment and enrichment (Implementation) and what we want our children to have achieved and experienced by the time they leave us in Year 6 (Impact).

Breadth of Study Map

Below is a link to our breadth of study map for Design Technology.

The breadth of study map ensures that every child receives their full curriculum entitlement as they progress through the school.

We plan and deliver our curriculum on a two year cycle of learning (Cycle A & Cycle B).

Key Skills Progression Plan

As part of our ongoing curriculum development work, our subject leaders are preparing detailed skills development documents for every subject. This term (Autumn 2021), as part of our school development work, the subject leaders are developing and trialling these skills progression documents for the subjects and topics being delivered this term. These will be published soon.

Our curriculum begins in the Early Years Foundation Stage. As part of the process of developing the skills progression documents, we have met as a staff team and carefully considered the prerequisite skills required for our EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) children to be ready to access the National Curriculum at the beginning of Year 1. These prerequisite skills can be found by clicking on the link below.

Curriculum Milestones and Assesssments

Below are the links to the Curriculum Milestones for Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2 for 2022-23 and 2023-24.

Each of the Curriculum Milestones link to the Design Technology curriculum which develops the knowledge and skills of the children in the aspects of ‘Structures’, ‘Mechanisms’, ‘Textiles’, ‘Mechanical Systems’ and ‘Electrical Systems’. In each aspect of the curriculum, the children build on their prior learning and develop their knowledge and skills in designing, making, evaluating and their technical knowledge and understanding.

The different aspects of the curriculum repeat, adding to the skills and knowledge of the children.

Children achieve at a ‘Basic Level’, the ‘Expected Level’, or a ‘Deep Level’. Curriculum Milestones are used as our assessment tool in Design technology (DT).
